What's the Point?
January has been a long month, no surprise here. However, we made it! I heard Luke Combs’s “Six Feet Apart” on the radio this week and I thought it was an apt song. Like Luke, the conclusion I reached was yes “there will be light after dark”.
It’s the last day of January. If you are an over-thinker and planner like me, the times may not seem conducive for your big picture. Your grand scheme to conquer the world, create relationships, enjoy life, and show the world who you are (all in-person) seems to be foiled.
Things don’t seem to be going the way we thought, but unmet expectations could have happened any other year and without the pandemic. The end of January, especially if you were riding on the novelty of the new year to accomplish your goals, can be discouraging. You may be wondering why you should care about anything. You may not have followed your plan to work out, eat healthy, stay positive, read your Bible, check on others, read more books or live life to the fullest as best you can. You may have thought ‘what’s the point?’ multiple times already and that’s fine. Why should you care?
Well here are a few points that answer my question. They are not new but they are worth repeating:
Foundation Laying: I believe this season is a period to reset the world for the next couple of years. Companies, organizations, governments, and individuals are evaluating their processes, goals, and trajectories to ensure that they are relevant now and will be in the future. Companies are evaluating their past accomplishments and planning what they intend to accomplish in the future. Individuals need to do the same too(I know I have mentioned this before and it’s because you still haven’t done so). So evaluate your trajectory and care for your future self enough to work on developing positive habits now.
Clarity/Sifting: I think this season will sift the good eggs from the bad. There will be clarity in terms of what characteristics to maintain and those to let go of. This is time to seriously evaluate relationships to embrace/build/hold on to because they build you up and put value into you. And to let go of relationships where they only reach out to you when they need something. You will be better off evaluating life, principles, relationships, and opinions now because life will get busy again and you want to be ready for that.
Preparation: the point of all this is to prepare our hearts and minds for the future. A future where things may not go as planned but we need to have faith that God knows best. A future where we must act in wisdom because we know the word of God and we have used the time in isolation to enhance our knowledge of God, people, and life.
God cares: God cares about what you do right now. He knows you have the strength to get things done and stay in faith believing because you have His strength. It matters because everything you do should be as unto the Lord. I know it’s easy to be lax and there will be days when just showing up is enough. But remember that you can be and do more and aspire to do so.
Other people: there are a couple of people that are reliant on you. They rely on your presence, your personality, your life experiences, your words (serious or otherwise), your aura, and your future. You have a lot to offer the world. Bear this in mind when the tendency not to care creeps in. You are an anchor for some so keep pushing for their sake and future generations.
Everything you do matters.
1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Thank you for reading this! Keep the fire burning.
