Mothers Day - what being a first time mom has taught me
I just got two boxes of clothes from a friend. And boy am I relieved. I don’t need to buy clothes for a while for my five-month-old that wears clothes meant for nine-month-old babies!
Village: I have learned that it literarily takes a village to raise a child. Right from the hospital, there have been moments when I couldn’t imagine not having certain people around. Like my husband (shout out to single moms) they deserve accolades. My brother and his family came for my delivery. My mum came for a month as well. Also, I will be eternally grateful for that. I will forever appreciate those that visited, brought, or sent food, diapers, wipes, and clothes. Anyone who showed concern and support is high on my priority list. You cannot go solo with having a child. I am used to being independent. Not this time!
Rest: When I am asked how I am doing, my response is “good, but really good when I take a nap”. I love life. I love living to the fullest and expending energy. I am not an energy conserver. I am learning to rest and take naps. The advice to “sleep when the baby does” is sound. I am learning to silence the voice that insinuates that I am lazy because I need a nap. I know I am utilizing more energy awake so I need to recharge more.
Heart: I am learning about God’s love. A mother’s love is unique and has been critically acclaimed. Yet, a mother’s love is nothing close to what God has for us. I am learning how to care and feel. I did before but it’s different now. I typically don’t sacrifice because I want something in return but I didn’t need to sacrifice as frequently as I have to now. I do know that I am making a worthwhile investment both for my selfhood and for my baby’s.
Faith and Prayer: God has a special place in his heart for babies. I definitely can attest to this. God loves answering prayers that pertain to his little ones. I am learning to lean on Him. The world is scary and it’s easy to dwell on my little innocent out in the world but prayer certainly boosts my confidence. It is written: mine will be different and will thrive.
